I am excited to write this blog entry because of the meaning behind the direction shift of Attach For Life (AFL). AFL will always work with traumatized people in general. The specific direction shift for AFL that I am talking about is ONLY working with adoptive parents and their biological children and NOT working with the adopted children anymore.
There are many reasons for this shift. Among those reasons are evidences of chaos, PTSD, broken hearts, and trauma that Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) leaves in its wake for the adoptive parents and their biological children. I have witnessed so many adoptive parents and many of their biological children (with adopted siblings) suffering from the devastating results of RAD. (If you don’t know what RAD is google RAD online.)
I say all this to say, I want to help adoptive parents and their biological children heal from the trauma left from broken relationships with their adopted children/sibling. Maybe, your adopted child has ran away from your home or left you with an estranged situation; completely ostracizing you from them. Maybe they have left estranged unless they need something from you. Maybe your adopted child has your grandchild and withholds them from you as punishment. The list of possibilities could be lengthy.
Love doesn’t always conquer all. Trying harder doesn’t always work either and leaves an adoptive family feeling like they are failures. RAD is such a difficult disorder to overcome so please understand they had RAD before they came to you.
